hey hey!

it's been ages since I posted updates. I went to Canberra, Australia for a residency at Megalo Print Studios with Arthur Desmarteaux. We were there for 6 weeks in November/December making a new puppet show. Check out this LINK for updates!

PsycheDADA Opening reception

Here are some of the highlight photos from the opening reception at AKA gallery in Saskatoon. An AKA Gallery and PAVED Arts collaborative project co-curated by Tod Emel and David LaRiviere. Featuring works by Larry Carlson, Arthur Desmarteaux & Allison Moore, Keith Murray, Noxious Sector and Jeremy Shaw. Arthur and I brought our large puppet heads to share with others for the opening reception, and we also painted a large mural. Photos by Bart Gazzola.

Psychedada brings together artists whose practices contend with the anomalies and oddities of chance at play in creative consciousness. Arthur Desmarteaux & Allison Moore (Montréal, QC), Larry Carlson (New York, NY) Arthur Desmarteaux and Allison Moore present brilliantly coloured and image dense serigraphs, prints, collages and puppet shows, creating a heady mix of Rabelaisian excess and underground comic trippyness. Carlson's videos are a high speed jump cut leap into a vertiginous Technicolour information overload, animated realizations of the mind bending juxtapositions of his collage work. Psychedada is a collaborative curatorial project by Tod Emel (AKA) and David LaRivierre (PAVED Arts).

I have lots of octopus arms in many projects now. Arthur Desmarteaux and myself recently created a puppet theatre company, Egotrip Productions. We started producing a series of short shadow puppet shows in Montreal for Cafe Concrete. Currently our main focus is an immense public art project for the City of Montreal. We are making a massive ceramic mosaic mural for the youth library in Point aux trembles. Please check out our blog, for updates on these exciting projects. EGOTRIP. I am also in residence at Oboro New Media Labs creating a video installation entitled Urban Terrarium. More updates soon...too busy creating!

This last week I participated in an intensive 6 day workshop with Aaron Pollard and Stephen Lawson of 2boystv. Based in Montréal, this transdisciplinary collaborative duo have created and toured, nationally and internationally, a wide repertoire of epic multimedia cabaret works, performances, videos and installations. The workshop concentrated on integrating performance with video projections, and was organized through the Association Québécoise des Marionnettistesoste.

PAPER CUT at HTMlles 2010

Here are some images from the first day of PAPER CUT at the HTMLLes Festival in Montreal. My video game was developed as part of the intensive workshop DIGITAL LUDOLOGY at studio xx. Made in Blender 3d Game engine with the programming scripting help of Julien Beausejour.

Initiated by Studio XX in 1997, and evolving as quickly as technology itself, theHTMlles Festival is an international platform dedicated to the presentation of women’s independent media artworks from all facets of contemporary technological creation, including but not limited to: digital storytelling, cyber art, short film and video art, audio and electronic art, installation, locative media, 3D animation, game art, virtual reality, electronic publishing, design, performance and interdisciplinary practices.

The Digital Ludology Space invites you to explore imaginative worlds and playful encounters, courtesy of Digital Ludology: Studio XX’s game creation workshop initiated by Bérengère Marin-Dubuard in 2008. These unique new games will spill out into the exhibition space, beckoning you to set down the everyday world and play along. The Digital Ludology Space promises to be a provocative yet lighthearted environment devoted to exploring the playful side of digital art. The space features creative gaming contexts, unusual controllers, alternative narratives, and experimental interactions, all set to a fun retro soundtrack. Over the course of the week, we will also play host to workshops, fantasy pitches and show-and-tell sessions showcasing the creativity of our local women game creators. Wood Joystick!

My wishes have been granted. I have a wooden joystick. I am certain to get a lot of joy out of this stick. And so can you. With the help of Jodie Bard of TWIG toys in Montreal, I have a wooden joystick for my video game project PAPER CUT. The game will be presented with the Stick at HTMLLEs festival in Montreal this week. Geordie Theatre Space @ 4001 Rue Berri, below duluth. November 17, 2010.

Paper CUT! New Bear animation

I added a bear to my video game in Blender! I also decided to rename the game from Timber Jack....to PAPER CUT. Here is the first test animation of my bear.

Last week I was fortunate to have a sneak peak of the new DOME construction at the [SAT] in Montreal. The Society of Arts and Technology is completely renovating their building to create a New Media arts venue, featuring an immersive video Dome that will host video/audio art projects in 360 degree surround environment. Being able to see the dome under construction was certainly inspiring and creates a lot of creative buzz in my brain. so many possibilities! We had a nice demo of a 3d blender model in action using a iphone to control your orientation in the virtual dome space. With a launch in 2011, the next year certainly promises some exciting opportunities. Thanks to Joseph Lefèvre of Mixsessions for gathering all the VJs together to have a preview.....

Htmlles And Timber Jack

Timber Jack, the video game I produced as a commissioned work at Studio XX has been selected for presentation for the Htmlles Festival in November. Nearly two years after the project was initially started, I am now digging back into the archival blender files to re-hack some fix ups and add some new elements. Yesterday I animated a BEAR! I am working again with Blender aficionado Julien Beausejour who is dedicating some time to help me with the complicated programing of the game in Python script language. Here are some of the modeling pics from this week. I am drawing the bear today to load as texture to the model, and I have a Lady Lumberjack drawn out and water-colored for a secondary character to add. More updates soon..

Projet d'art public, arrondissement de Pointe-aux-Trembles, Montréal /////// Public Art Project in Montreal

The Rally : a large mosaic commissioned by City of Montreal, Canada

I will be creating a large mosaic (approx. 3 x8m) which will be permanently installed in the library of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Montreal. This project is made in collaboration with artist Arthur Desmarteaux and should be installed in Spring 2011.

The work is a mysterious and exotic landscape where many creatures from our imagination and popular culture meet : animals, mythical and legendary creatures. It is a portayal of a mysterious ecosystem, a parallel universe. We want this work to evoke the world of childhood and magic. The themes of exoticism and circus emerge from this narrative and visually exciting peice.

We choose the medium of mosaic because it is durable, it allows to use very bright colors and lends itself well to the creation of a mural. We designed a tree where is the wedge between the two walls to create a continuity or a thread in the work.

Le grand rassemblement : une œuvre commandée par la Ville de Montréal

Je vais créer une mosaïque de grand format qui sera installée en permanence à la bibliothèque de l'arrondissement Pointe-aux-Trembles à Montréal. Ce projet est réalisé en collaboration avec Allison. Nous prévoyons installer l'œuvre au printemps prochain.

L’œuvre représente une jungle foisonnante où évoluent des personnages plus grands que nature et des monstres loufoques que nous inventons. Une flore exubérante de notre cru peuple ce paysage intemporel. Nous optons pour un style lumineux, vivement coloré, graphique et simplifié qui rappelle la bande dessinée, le dessin animé et les illustrations de contes de fées. Nous avons imaginé un paysage mystérieux et exotique ou se côtoie un grand nombre de créatures issues de notre imaginaire et de la culture populaire : dragons, animaux, créatures mythiques ou légendaires.

Nous voulons évoquer une atmosphère burlesque, libre, affirmant la vie. Les personnages que nous créons évoquent un univers poétique et grotesque. C’est une œuvre narrative qui se veut d’abord et avant tout amusante et qui cherche à stimuler l’imaginaire des spectateurs face au foisonnement de personnages et de plantes humanisées. Nous désirons apporter quelques moments de joie aux visiteurs des lieux grâce à notre art aux couleurs vibrantes.

L'œuvre se déploie sur deux murs d'approximativement trois par huit mètres (au total).
